Barbara;
I have heard that same story, I have saw it in print, BUT nothing has shown any proof...
You say John Merck came from Germany at age 16*** I say Johann Jacob disapeared at age 16-17. You say John Merck went back to Holland and Married** I beleive he went back to South Carolina.. They were Waite's around Greewood before 1800's.. Waite's married into the Pulliam Family, Pulliams some how, some way tied to the Merck family.
Johann Baulazor Merck (John's father?)signed to start one of the first Luthern Church's in South Carolina. My G-G Granfather Baulser (1795), spoke Germany as a family lanuage, spoke very broken English. The children of John Merck are of the Merck family given names.... John Merck = Johann Jacob Merck ?????

Cliff Merck
