Thursday, July l0, l924

Old time friends in Leon will learn with sorrow of the death of REV. W.G. HOHANSHELT, a former Pastor of the M. E. Church in Leon, which occurred at the General Hospital in Los Angeles, California, on Friday morning, June 20, after a year's illness with heart trouble. He is survived by his wife, who was formerly MISS BASHA MERRELL, of Indianola, to whom he was married in l870, and by whom he had three daughters and a son, DR. ANNA HOHANSHELT, of the Los Angeles General Hospital; and MRS. NINA H. BROWN, an instructor at Simpson College, Indianola; MRS. LULU E. NEWTON, of Cody, Wyoming, and WALTER M., of Sanders, Montana. The last two named were unable to be present at the funeral services, which were held at the First Methodist church in Monrovia, California, on Monday, June 23, at l:30 o'clock, after which the remains were taken to Forest Lawn at Glendale, at the Little Church of the Flowers, where Dr. J.H. Senseney, a former ministerial associate at Long Beach, and Dr. D.C. Franklin, retired minister at Los Angeles, paid a last tribute to their departed friend. Both of these men were members of the Des Moines Conference at the time REV. HOHANSHELT was a Pastor and District Superintendent in that Conference, and Dr. Franklin was also a former Pastor of the Chariton Church.

WILLIAM GEORGE HOHANSHELT was born April l8, l856, in Wisconsin. When twelve years of age, his family moved to Dallas County, Iowa, near Panora, where he lived on a farm throughout his boyhood and early manhood.

He taught school several years and then attended Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. It was here that he met and married MISS BASHA MERRELL in l879.

Leaving college, he lived on his farm and did the work of a local preacher until September, l883, when he entered the active ministry and entered the Des Moines Conference. He received his first appointment from Bishop Simpson.

During his thirty-two years of work in the Des Moines Conference, REV. HOHANSHELT served Pastorates at Menlo, Dexter, Leon, Grace Church at Des Moines, Red Oak, Vilisca, First Church at Boone, Chariton, Winterset, and was then appointed District Superintendent of Creston District. After moving to California eight years ago, he served mission churches at different places, going to Monrovia in l920.
