Thank you and yes, this is the Richard of Warwickshire I'm hoping I'll one day be able to tie into, using Y-DNA testing by other Merrell and Merrill men to confirm the link.
You asked what is involved with Y-DNA testing: You order a kit and you take a small hard paper swab and rub it in your mouth against cheek and gums for a little bit. You put it back in a container or envelope and send it off.
It does take time to get the results back. The first 12 markers generally are back within a month or so. The results of this test, however, are very important as they can place you within your specific haplogroup.
My haplogroup is "R1b" and so is another Merrill man who has been tested.
As the other markers come in, my last 12 came in next (markers 26 thru 37) and within another couple of weeks markers 13 thru 25 came in, you will be able to, with the help of other folks, have a pretty good idea where your guys originated and when and how they moved through Europe and such.
After more Merrill, Merrell and Merle men get the test done, we will have a large enough pool of data to ascertain how far back it is to a common ancestor. We will also be able to determine, rather quickly, if we are even related or not. Many of our families may not be related. It could very well be that the only thing we have in common is that somewhere in our past a male decided to change his name, there was a paternity event, adoption or some such thing.
One thing is for certain, though. One will find out just who he, his children, fathers, uncles, paternal grandfather and on and on are all related to.
I did get some very, very surprising information from my first 12-marker results. From what group my Merrell males descended. I will not go into it here. If you or anyone else on this list is interested, please drop me a line and I will send it directly to you. I will not post it all here.
If you should have any other questions about my line, please write to me at the email address below:
Thanks for the interest. I wish you luck in your quest.
