“Captain Benjamin Merrill and the Merrill Family of North Carolina” was published in 1935 by William Ernest Merrill of Penrose, Transylvania County, NC. It is available in softbound photocopy format for $12.00 from Selby Publishing, 3405 Zartman Road, Kokomo, Indiana 46902-2979.

A portion of the book has been reproduced online at the following link.

It should be emphasized that in his book, W. E. Merrill incorrectly identified Richard Merrill (1642-1727) of Staten Island, NY and his wife Sarah Wells (1649-1722) as the parents of William Merrill (d. 1724) of Hopewell, NJ. This has been proven incorrect, as Richard Merrill’s son William actually migrated to Maryland and died there in 1714. Richard Merrill was probably baptized in Stretton-on-Fosse, Warwickshire in 1641. Richard Merrill’s wife was actually Susanna Wells (baptized 1651), the daughter of Phillip Wells of Tysoe Parish, Warwickshire. Richard and Susanna were residents of Lower Tysoe Parish, Warwickshire, England before migrating to America, and the births of four of their children can be found in the parish register there.

William Merrill and his wife Grace, the grandparents of Captain Benjamin Merrill, were married and residing on Staten Island, New York in the 1680s. They removed to Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ, and later settled in Hopewell, Mercer County, NJ where William died leaving a will in 1724. It seems probable that William may have been a younger brother of Richard Merrill, although this has not been conclusively proven. Research of genealogist Bob Davidson suggests that Richard and possibly William were likely sons of William Merrill and wife Alice Duppa of Shipston upon Stour, Warwickshire, England. The family can be traced two more generations further back in Honington, Warwickshire, England. A good starting place for research on this family is Pat Patterson’s website, and in particular Bob Davidson’s research.
