I've been thinking about this. Given John Basnett's age, the Catherine Merrell he married would have been of an age to be the daughter of Clement "Merl." I have a doc from Monongalia that says Catherine Lewis (born abt. 1760 in Chester PA) was Catherine "Merrells" in 1814. In 1785, a Catherine Lewis joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Fayette Co. PA with a letter from Vincent Church in Chester, so clearly she married late. Her father, Philp, was on Fayette tax rolls 1785 and owned 207 acres in Monongalia from 1784 and his chikdren owned it in 1814.

I think this Catherine, wife of Clem Merrell, was my Catherine Lewis. But who was he?
