The following is from the booklet "Southern Maryland Families" by Raymond B. Clark, Jr., 1987. This article was submitted by Mrs. Nettie Leitch Major:
"Reuben Meriwether brought to Maryland a Virginia ancestry that connects to important families of landed gentry in Virginia. Many publications have appeared in print about the family, no two quite agreeing with the other. By his marriage to Sarah Dorsey at Annapolis, daughter of Thomas Beale Dorsey, his descendants many (may?) claim connection to earliest of Maryland and Virginia families. Somehow the spelling of his name became confused in Maryland records. When writing his will he signed with an added'a'...Meriweather. (Original will. Box M, Folder 69, Hall of Recrods.) He came to Annapolis at the request of his half-uncle, John Morton Jordan, who was special agent for the Calverts. At the Hall of Records, Archives volues, wills and deeds for the span of his years in Maryland, are replete with entries. He was an Attorney at Law for many important families in Maryland. The inventory of his estate lists many law books and a number of the classics of his day."
"Nicholas Meriwether (1631-1678) came to the new world about 1652 (first document date fund) and lived at James Citie, and began expanding his lands. With him were brothers and one sister (Virginia accounts of the family from oritinal records.) He married Elizbeth Woodhouse, and as a widow she married (2) William Browne, Sr. All wills and deeds for the era and anmes were uncovered. Their son, Nicholas Meriwether (1675-1744) married Elizabeth Crawford, daughter of David. David Meriwether married Ann Homes/Hoomes, and died Louisa County 1744 (will partial in first will book of Louisa County. David's son, Nicholas Mereiwether (1719-1758) married Frances Morton and NOT Mary Pryor as erroneously published. She was the daughter of Capt. John Morton and Mary Mountjoy, who married (2) William Jordan and had John Morton Jorday, the half-uncle of Reuben Meriwether, of importance to Reuben Meriwether's Maryland activities."
