On 19 July 1875, Jacob Scherschligt and Amelia Messemer were married in Lawrence Co., TN. Amelia was apparently from the NYC area.

In 2000, a Bernard Birkle (who apparently died in 2001)posted the following message to a message board. "I am searching for any information on Jacob Scherschligt, his wife Amelia and their dua. Lucy, who came to Astoria, Clatsop County Oregon about 1880 from St. Louis Missouri. Jacob was a blacksmith by trade. Jacob was born about 1950 in Germany, Amelia was born in New York and their dau. was born in St. Louis in 1878. Additional sons, Harry and George and possibly Charles, were born in Oregon between 1880 and 1890. About 1890/91, Jacob was in the process of securing about 400 acres along the Columbia River when he died by drowning in the Columbia River. Amelia possible remarried to a man named Heneresy? and died by 1892. The children; Lucy, Harry and George returned to New York about 1892 to live with relatives. Jacob's family could not be found in the federal census for 1880 because they were likely on the way to Oregon. They could not be found in the Oregon 1890 census because of the archive fire. By 1900 Jacob and Amelia were dead and the children were in New York. If anyone can search the local records for any information on this family it will be greatly appreciated."

The 1900 Census for NYC, 18th Ward, Manhattan, roll 1102, page 102 reads
