Hi
This is now a very old post but to help people I have more knowledge and can pass it on.
I am also looking for more info on the Meters of Lamerton/Sourton Devon
My branch of the Metters came from Devon and moved to Cumberland. They were miners/workers in and around Dartmoor. My earliest found ancestor is William b 1785 +/- in Lamerton or Sourton m Margaret ? There are other Metters in that area who must be related.
In 1841 and 1851 William was living in Mary Tavy (north of Tavistock), he had or had had 11 children at least 5 of whom (three men 2 women) moved to Haverigg and Millom in Cumberland in the mid 1800s.
These married into the Wood family from Somerset, the Voisey from Devon and are linked to the Crossman from Devon via the Wood family and to other families, eg Clemens, Burn .
One branch of the family had two sons, died in South Africa 1900 and in Mexico 1888. Another branch moved to America in the mid 1920s, initially to Wilkes Barr PA, and stayed there. Some of their Wood cousins went with them. My grandfather came back to Haverigg in the late 20's after an accident. The Metters, Wood (and Voisey?) were Methodists, either Primitive or Bible Christians and varyingly preachers, sunday school teachers or church/circuit trustees
