The best explanation for the Metz to Metts transition that I know of is the official recordings of the names for census, birth and marriage records. Apparently many record keepers didn't spell very well or maybe didn't think it important. Metz was the spelling in the old country, Metts was the outcome in the U.S. Notify Administrator about this message?
