My father was born will metze in 1906. When he started school in 1912, the teachers "americanized" the german spelling of metze/metz to the spelling metts. Teachers/census takers also "americanized the spelling of one of my grandfathers from fuellmer to the spelling fulmer. I am researching my father's line and have found that you need to look closely at all the spellings of metts re: metz/metze/mets/metts/meetze
