JOSEPH HALE MEVIS born February 3, 1918, a prominent figure in the electrical contracting business, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at his home in Missouri City, Texas. He was born and raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the oldest of 3 children born to William Herman Mevis and Mayme Irene Haakinson Mevis. Joe began his career in the electrical business in May of 1936, working in the warehouse of Westinghouse Electric while attending Cedar Falls High School. In August of 1945 he joined the US Army Air Corps and was stationed in Kerns, Utah. After his honorable discharge, he married his hometown sweetheart, Elizabeth Ann Greene, (now deceased) and resumed his career in Iowa with Warren Electric Company. In 1942 he was transferred to the Houston area and founded Nunn Electric Supply in 1947 with 2 partners. Nunn became one of the largest electrical wholesale houses in the country prior to it's acquisition in 1983. He retired shortly thereafter and returned to a part-time consulting capacity some years later. Joe loved sports, but because of rheumatic fever as a child, he was unable to compete. Subsequently, he chose to manage various high school teams, no doubt helping him prepare for a successful business career. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Temple, a member of the Humble Oil Gray Lodge, the Arabian Shrine Temple, the First United Methodist Church of Missouri City, Texas, as well as a member of numerous other electrical organizations across the country. In 1970 he married Edith Ball Ross. They traveled extensively across the country and abroad, and lived life to the fullest. He was a kind and loving husband, Father, mentor, and friend. He touched the lives of many, many people with his enormous generosity and special brand of humor. He will be dearly missed, but lives on in the lives of those who knew him. Joe is survived by his wife, Edith, of 31 years; his son, William Hale Mevis; his daughter, Judy Ann Mevis-Farmer; his stepson, Douglas Joel Ross; his stepdaughter, Linda Rachella Disnard; his brother, Willis Herman Mevis; his sister, Janet Clare Karpan; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate and honor his life will be held Saturday, July 28, 2001 at 4:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church of Missouri City. A reception in the church Fellowship Hall will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 20448, Houston, TX 77225-0448 or the Methodist Children's Home, 5005 Mitchelldale, Houston, TX 77092
