Dear Elizabeth, Did his parents live in Ohio at the time of their deaths? I found a Harry Coe, age 13, on the 1920 census in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan where he was listed as the ward of Eleanor Girodat (?). Do you think this is he? I found some Johns and Marys on the Online Ohio Death Index. http://ohsweb.ohiohistory.org/death// Are you basing their year of death on your grandfather's age when his parents died? If so, I would give it some leeway. If they died in Michigan during that time period, the death certificates covering that time span are being indexed and, I think digitalized, by Ancestry and are supposed to be available in the future at both ancestry and either the Library of Michigan website or possibly the Michigan vital records website. Since your grandfather was so young when his parents died, he probably didn't know very much about them or their parents. Following is the website for the Mormon church's testing of online images. Has some MIchigan records. Since it is a test site, there are some problems and the site isn't always available. http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0 If this is your first attempt at researching, you might want to join a local genealogy society. Many offer a beginner's class and can help you learn how to research and what to believe. Regarding the Coe name, there are tons of Coes running around, including my husband's paternal grandmother. She traced the family back to Robert Coe the Puritan who came over about 1634. Unfortunately, she did not provide sources for her research. Did Harry have any siblings? Think I may have found him on the 1910 census in Grand Rapids listed as Henry A. Coe. He is listed as the son of John Coe, age 51, who was born in New York as were his parents. Under marital status, it has 2M for John so this may be his second marriage. The woman listed as his wife is named Jane, age 48, 1M and has no children and did not have any children. The only weird thing is that the census taker put down that they have been married 22 years unless it was supposed to be 2 years. I would imagine that John remarried shortly after his wife died so that he would have someone to take care of his son. Georgia Notify Administrator about this message?
