Dear Lisa,
Since Tom found her on the census when she was 3 years old and living with her parents, I would think that her birthplace is Massachusetts. If she is deceased and you do not mind spending the money, you could have a search done for her birth record at the State of Michigan for $26.00 since you are her daughter and heir. It may have been that she was born at home and the birth did not get registered properly in MA.
Where have you checked for her birth record? At the state level? City?
Would there have been a baptismal record? Have you looked for one of those?
