Dear Lorraine,

I have a St. Clair County Romaine family connection, too, and the Romaines did come from Belgium. Marie Romaine (possibly Marie Delphine), who married John Gilbert, was the mother of my paternal greatgrandmoter Ida May (possibly Adele marie) Gilbert, b. St. Clair County in August 1875. My father remembers, from when he was a little boy, that someone brought Marie Romaine Gilbert over to the house, that she was so old at the time, probably about 85, that she had to be carried in. My dad also says that his grandma spoke Flemish.

Terrie Carmell
