As a student taking a course in the origins of German words, at the University in Freiburg, Germany, I was told by a German Linguistics professor that the Michaelis surname is actually a very old German name, which has no relation to the Greek surname Michaelis. I haven't got any proof of this, but he knew the subject extremely well, and I believe him.
