Michaelis from Germany

Very new to this....my grandfather was Gordon Michaelis, the youngest of around 15 children born to Fred Michaelis. Fred came from Germany originally, in fact his parents never left. I have no idea who they were, but I have a very old charcoal drawing of them that was on the wall at the old farmhouse. Fred came to Canada, and as rumour would have it, he travelled all the way from Cobden to Rosenthal on Horseback, where he finally purchased the farm that my family currently owns. There is even a spot on the rock where he carved his name along with the date 1907. I don't know much else. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know where to begin.
