HELEN OWEN SARGENT MICHENER

Helen Owen Sargent Michener, 105, of Brigham's Cove, Maine, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Winship Green Nursing Center. She was born April 5, 1897, in Fairhaven, Vt., a daughter of Edward Price and Mabel Smith Owen. She graduated from Stevens High School in Claremont, N.H. [New Hampshire], in 1915 and was a graduate of Springfield Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, Mass. [MA, Massachusetts]
She married George Edwin Sargent June 28, 1924. They moved to Portland in 1930 when her husband opened "sound" pictures at the State Theatre. In
1945, they moved to Bath, ME, and in 1956 to Waterville, ME. She was a member of the Rotary Wives, the Longfellow Garden Club of Portland, ME, and the Oakhurst Garden Club of Cape Elizabeth. She participated in Congregational church activities. She was a member of DAR and became regent of the Elizabeth Wadsworth Chapter in 1980. She was president of Woman's Literary Union from 1978 to 1980 and became an honorary life-member on her 100th birthday in 1997. She was a member of the Women Descendants of the Ancient Colonists and compiled and published her ancestral genealogy of the Smith-Ranney-Owen families in 1972.
She was predeceased by her husband, George, who died in August 1962. In 1966 she married Col. William Michener (ret.). They resided on Chambers Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME. He died in 1971.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Sargent Wold and her husband, Lawrence, of Brigham's Cove, West Bath; three grandchildren, Diane Wold Jennings and Susan Wold Saunders, both of Boca Raton, Fla., and Leigh Sargent Wold of Cape Elizabeth; five great-grandchildren and two nieces and two nephews.
There was no funeral service.
A family committal service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Spurwink Church, Cape Elizabeth, at a future date.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland, ME 04106, or to the Eunice Frye Home, 37 Capisic St., Portland, ME 04102. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis and Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath, ME.
