Craig,
Thomas Midkiff born about 1710 (my estimation)had sons Joseph and John.Joseph married Hannah Parsons and John married Agnes Parsons, so two brothers married two sisters.
The older Thomas (listed above)had moved to Rowen Co, NC in an area that later became Surry Co.He had brothers named Francis and Charles. The Surry Co, NC written records have horribly misspelled words, names, etc.Sincerely was actually written "Cinserly".You'll find the early records of Surry Co with the name spelled "Madcalf".Francis was an overseer of the roads.
Surry Co, NC was hit hard by Tory attacks and my best guess is that the older Thomas died in one of those attacks. His grandson Isaiah went to Surry Co, NC to serve in the Revolutionary war and aid family against the Tory attacks. His brother Thomas had also moved there by 1786.
The younger Thomas served in the 9th Regiment of VA at Brandwine where many soldiers were either captured or escaped.Isaiah served under Capt Shelton and later Capt Joseph Cloud. You'll find Joseph was a great hero at the Battle of Cowpens when he led the NC militia against the British soldiers.
At this point we have some of the family living in VA and some in NC.By 1791 grandsons Isaiah and Thomas had moved to Hawkins (later Grainger Co, TN).Thomas's will was 6 May 1794 and Isaiah signed as a witness along with John Green, another soldier.
I hope this answers the question of VA/NC for you.
