Origins of Milano family from Milan?

My family originated in Milan. We've been investigating our history and have come up with something fascinating...

While nothing's conclusive, there seems to be evidence indicating that our family may have been of Jewish origin. In the late 1400's and early 1500's, a lot of Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition settled in Milan, Italy. A very common practice for Jews of the time period was to simply take the name of whatever town they lived in as their surname.

Has anyone else stumbled across anything like this?
