Dear Carol--I am descended from Gretchen Milliman. She would be my grandmother. When she was married to John Thomas McCandless in 1918, for some unknown reason she put "May Smith" as her maiden name on their marriage certificate. She listed her father as "Edward Smith" and her mother as "Trena Helser".When visiting with Colleen, she had a picture of John Thomas McCandless, his father, brothers and my dad's baby sister. They found this picture in Gretchen's box of pictures.A niece of Gretchen's told Colleen that for a fact Gretchen had two other children from a marriage because she babysat for them when she was 12 years old.The children were taken away from Tom and "May" aka Gretchen. The children were my dad and his sister. My dad was born in 1919 and his sister in 1922 and they were placed in the Davenport Iowa Soldiers Orphanage. When Gretchen went back to Mt. Pleasant with another husband, her brother and sister asked where the children were. She told them they had been taken away but by that time they were unable to find the two childen. My dad was placed in August of 1925 in southwest Iowa, Clearfield with the Floyd and Mary Uglow's.His sister was adopted and her name was changed from Daisy Beryl McCandless to Jean Kitzman and was raised in What Cheer, Iowa.My dad was never adopted but they called him Ronald Uglow. When he ran away from them when he was about 14 or so, he took back his name of William McCandless.Colleensaid Gretchen never admitted to having other children, perhaps a secret she never told herlast husband of 50 years.Who knows.Makes for very interesting genealogy.
