Happy Holidays to Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and the various and sundry relatives…
Many of you know that for the past few years, I’ve been chasing squirrels through the family tree. You know, those fleeting and hard to pin down facts that make for the truth of the story, even though the popular version may be more entertaining. My research is not as thorough as that of Uncle Charlie (Millwater) or his cousin Peter Scheuler. All of my grandparents and my father have passed on, but I’m working with Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and my Mom, who have all provided great assistance. Using these resources, I’ve made considerable progress.
As a genealogist (OK, junior grade, at best) I believe that documentation is the key to unraveling many mysteries… but even that most meager can lead to proof. Photos, weathered ID cards, military records that you might not look at twice; these can all provide pointers to the Real McCoy.
Some of us have used online portals such as genealogy.com and ancestry.com to share our findings, ask questions of each other and post photos. While these internet resources have their place, I can’t help but think that everything posted there is publicly available, as well as claimed by those entities as ‘copyrighted material.’ Shame on them.
In order to provide a means for the FAMILY MEMBERS to view, add, edit and communicate our genealogy, I present, as a Christmas Gift, www.conlowsearch.org/genealogy.
I truly looked long and hard for a way to make this happen. And I believe that this is the best way to go. You will have to APPLY to the system, but once approved you will have access to the entire database of individuals, families, places and photos that I have gathered. And, more importantly, I urge you to EDIT, CORRECT or ADD to the database! Even if you are unsure, the combined knowledge of the family will be able to sort things out.
Please forward this message to every member of the family who has access to a computer. I’m sending this to 20 people… surely there are a lot more that I don’t know about.
And please don’t be offended if your name isn’t Conlow…. This family is way bigger than that – Reilly, Millwater, Foeller, Hophan, Conry all come to mind. Even if you join and just take a look, I bet you could correct a fact or three J
The site is http://www.conlowsearch.org/genealogy, and I hope to see you there soon!
Season’s Greetings to you and yours!
