Meerlis/Mireles(German-Mexican, 1800s)

Over Christmas break I found some interesting family history: my mother's family's European origins are more Germanic than Spanish. As my grandmother tells the story, her grandfather's family, who bore the surname "Meerlis"(or a derivative thereof) migrated from either Germany or Austria to Mexico in the 18-whatevers, and upon arriving in the New World hispanicized the name to "Mireles." I was wondering if anybody else shares a similar history, or can point me to sources dealing with Austro-German immigration to Mexico in the 1800s.
