Thank you, Sharon, for your interest in my post. The people that I will refer to are biologically (and thus genealogically) related to me. But because of an adoption my family knows very little about them. Elnora Elizabeth Hines, born sometime between 1884 and 1888 (I've seen 1884, 1886, and 1888) to Frederick Sheldon Hines and Margaret Mariah Carnicle Hines, was married to a man named Eugene Rundell sometime in the early part of the 1900's. I have a 1900 Cass County MN Census CD and in that I was able to find "Nora" Hines still living with her parents. She is listed as 14 - she was born in Nov. Eugene Rundell is listed as living with his widowed mother, if I remember correctly.
I am under the understanding that she was more or less "sold" to Gene Rundell. She became pregnant but tragically Gene was killed in some type of accident (possibly wagon?) when Elnora was a mere 3 months pregnant, or thereabouts. William Warden, a bachelor who was much older, agreed to marry Elnora "to give the child a name." However, the child, Cecile Rundell, always carried Gene's name! My grandmother is a biological daughter of William and Elnora's who was adopted in 1921.
This story is what I've been told happened. My grandmother never had a birth certificate registered with the state and she was born, we believe from all available evidence, in 1917. So it is possible that Cecile never had a birth certificate either. Or for that matter, that Elnora and Gene or Elnora and William never had marriage certificates either. Gene must have had a death certificate tho, you would think wouldn't you? The next time I go to the MN History Center in St. Paul (I live in Bloomington) I'd like to look at the Pillager Post articles to see if I can find any reference to the death of Gene Rundell. Then, perhaps I could look for a death certificate after I have a year to go by. Again, from all available evidence, Gene's death and subsequent marriage of Elnora and William is believed to have taken place ca. 1902 or 1903, based on the fact that Cecile was approx. 18 in 1920 or 1921.
Fred and Margaret are buried in Pillager at Wildwood Cemetery and William Warden is buried in the City Cemetery in Motley. Elnora married again after the death of William and is buried in WA. I've been to Pillager a couple of times and I really like the city. I'm from a small town as well.
Let me know if you'd like any fee for your services and I can send you a money order either before or after your search. You can email me directly with your pertinent info. if you prefer. I should have asked for your email address rather than to post this lengthy response on the board! Perhaps someone else who knows the story of Elnora, Gene and William will respond to this post as well?!
Thank you so much for your kind offer, Sharon. I look forward to hearing from you again.
