Looking for family "Marti"/"Martin"- Switzerland>MN>PA....

Does anyone have any information on a family with the surname of MARTI... later changed to MARTIN.? I am not sure WHERE in MN the family lived, but, do know that they had a daughter born in the state in 1874.- Her name was Amelia Marti.- This information is thanks to a nice woman that sent me a reply to my posting on the Minnesota forum. She did a look up in the Census, and "found" my family, again in Pa.- She also told me that "she knew of a family of MARTI's in Dodge Co., MN, at one time... "

Amelia is found listed with her family in the census for 1880 in Allegheny, PA., and is listed as 1 yr. of age.- PLACE of birth: Minnesota

Her parents were my g.g.grandparents- Mathias Eduard Marti and Barbara SCHLITTLER.- Mathias was born on the 11 of Feb.,1845 in Engi, Glarus, Switzerland- Barbara was born on the 15 of Aug.,1849 in Niederuman, Glarus, Switzerland.-

Barbara was his 2nd wife, his first being Katharina LEUZINGER, she was born 31 Oct.,1844 in Mollis, Glarus, Switzerland. She died on 6 April, 1869, three months after giving birth to the couples first child, a son, Johannes Marti born 12 Jan., 1869.

The records for this line of my family, in the Swiss Archives of Glarus, stop in 1872- it is listed: "This family emigrated to North America, nothing was heard of them since their departure. The civil court of Glarus declared, in 1946, all of the above as "missing and presumed dead", with the effective date of July 4th,1872. (this happens to also be the dob of their one son, Samuel.?)

My g.grandfather was born in Aug. of 1883, the place is listed as "Allegheny, Pa." not sure if this was the county, town, or the old "Allegheny City"?-

I did find my g.g.grandmother listed in both the 1990, and 1919 census for Allgy. Pa, she is listed as "head of household", leading me to believe my g.g.grandfather had died by this time- Although I have no idea where, or when?-Both of which I hope to learn.

In one of these census records, I believe it was the one for 1900, it shows a woman by the name of "Emma" as being part of the household, she is listed with her husband, and 2yr old son... her PLACE of birth is listed as Minnesota.- At first, I thought that perhaps she worked for the family.- but, as I was going back over my notes, I found where an UNCLE of my g.g.grandfather's had in fact left Switzerland in 1866 and went to Minnesota!!... Unlike my g.g.grandparents, this Uncle DID keep in contact with his home canton, at least for a number of years!- (as his information can be found in the records of Glarus.)

It seemed reasonable to me that when my g.g.grandparents left Switzerland for a new country, they would want to come to an area where they had some family.... this then led to me wondering if Emma was in fact a daughter??-

In 1872, the family was in Switzerland, at least until July. In the 1880 Census it shows a daughter, Anna being born IN PA., in 1875/76.- Then, Amelia being born in MN., in 1878/79... the family is then back in Pa., in 1880.- Not sure if they went back to MN, and then had "Emma"?- I have no records of the family between 1872 till 1875/76, when Anna was born, then, no records between 1880- 1883, when my g.grandfather was born.- And, again, I have a "whole" between 1883 to 1900, when my g.g.grandmother is once again found in the Allegheny, Pa., census records.?
______________

Does anyone know if there was a census for MN in 1875? For that matter, would anyone know if Pa. had one that year?

What makes this even more confusing for me is this....in the 1880 Census, my g.g.grandfather is listed as "Edward" Martin, rather than his given first name of "Mathias".?? His MIDDLE name was "Eduard"- I could understand the name change from "Eduard" to "Edward", as I have seen this a number of times, as people wanted to "Americanize" their names, but, I can't understand why he would use his middle name, as his first, or why he changed our last name to MARTIN? - I have no idea when the name changes took place, and didn't know he went by his middle name until I rec'd this reply?!.. It now makes me wonder if that is perhaps why I am having such a hard time finding my family.. all the searches I have done to this point have been under his GIVEN FIRST NAME?!!

ALSO, in the census for 1880, Johannes is NOT Listed?? He was the first born son of my g.g.grandfather, and his first wife... in the Swiss records, it states that he came to America with his father, and 2nd wife, my g.g.grandmother.- I wonder where he was by 1880? He would've only been 11 years old?? Did he die, and if so, in what state, what year, where is he buried?.. Did he stay in MN, for some reason?- Whatever became of him?-

It is written in the Swiss records that the uncle of my g.g.grandfather, his name was Mathaus Marti, came to Minnesota in 1866, with his new bride, Maria LUCHSINGER, to "follow a brother of the wife's", it goes on to say, "this couple had no children, and Mathaus died in MN, in 1902."- Perhaps Johannes did stay in MN to help this couple on their farm? I really have no way of knowing, and it is yet another thing I do hope to learn!
