If you know the birthdate that your Christopher Mortensen celebrated, maybe that is another clue to help verify that the Bergen Mathias Christopher Mortensen is your ancestor. The Mathias Christopher Mortensen who emigrated from Bergen in 1892 is shown here as his birth record. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=8&filnamn=dp12011816&gardpostnr=46146&personpostnr=138406&merk=138406#ovre Year Baptised Church/local parish 46146 1872 2806 Nykirken Role Position Given name Last name Sex Residence Date of birth 138405 Barn Mathias Christopher m 1506 138406 Far Uhrmagersvend Mathias Christopher Mortensen 9-144 138407 Mor Albertine Gothilde Knoph Translation: born June 15, 1872, baptised on June 28, 1872 in the Nykirken parish, (how do those dates look compared to what you knew about him in Canada?) the child Mathias Christopher, male the father is a clock maker's apprentice Mathias Christopher Mortensen. The mother is Albertine Gothilde Knoph. The 1875 census shows the family in Bergen, but no additional information that I think helps to confirm things you may have known about him in Canada. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=14&filnamn=f71301&gardpostnr=9428&merk=9428#ovre 9428 * 10 Mathias Christoffer Mortensen 1 m Husfader Uhrmager 1838 Bergen Bergen 9-144 9429 11 Albertine Gothilde 1 f Husmoder 1837 Bergen Bergen 9-144 9430 12 Karen Marie 1 f Datter 1865 Bergen Bergen 9-144 9431 13 Rangna Lovise 1 f Datter 1869 Bergen Bergen 9-144 9432 14 Mathias Christoffer 1 m Søn 1873 Bergen Bergen 9-144 The above gives his birthyear at about 1873, but the censuses were usually taken in June, and if they only asked his age, then of course he would be age 1, because he was just about to have his birthday. So that is still up in the air for me. Here is the actual parish record for the Mathias Christoffer Mortensen b. 1872 in Bergen. source information (which parish books): Bergen fylke, Nykirken, Ministerialbok nr. B 3 (1870-1884), Fødte og døpte menn 1872, side 41. Permanent sidelenke (page link): http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7148&idx_id=7148&uid=ny&idx_side=-41 Permanent bildelenke (the actual photo of the scan): http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20061122040519.jpg This verifies that the year was 1872 for this Mathias Christoffer Mortensen, and you can see the dates. So now I am wondering what you had for birthdate as a family for him. Something else troubles me a bit. The Minnesota census information shows that he was first in Pa. Pennsylvania? ? Maybe. Then add to that, the fact that there is that middle name Maurice. My Norwegian American father-in-law had that middle name, but they pronounced it more like Morris. In Norway, Maurits is/was a man's name. One theory I have is that in Norway, when he left, he could have been Kristoffer/Christopher, etc. Mauritsen, but moved to a part of the country where his name was Americanized to Mortensen. It is possible that he wasn't really Mortensen in Norway. Often the first born son was named after the paternal grandfather. from the Minnesota information it shows that his name is Marius. Finding him somewhere in 1895 or 1890 . . . Notify Administrator about this message?
