In the incident that my grand father described to me. His grand father had told him that he and the six men who were rounded up with him were mere civilian farmers and one may have been a preacher. They were not confederate soldiers. They were arrested for simply giving aide to conferates. The executions occured somewhere along the Salt River in Missouri. The men were rounded up by a group of union soldiers who were local to the area. In fact when my great great grand father escaped during the night, the other six refused to escape with him because they believed the young union captain ( a man they had know all his life) would not execute them. My great great grandfather said they were all shot at dawn.
What I am tring to find out is who were these men, what date did this occur, and where did it occur.
I talked briefly with an old historian a few years ago that had read of the incident but couldnt give me any specifics other than he believed the men were not shot but that the cabin was burned by the soldiers with them inside.
Can anyone help me?
