Seeking photo copies of John G. Sommer (1818 Veldhausen, Bentheim, Lower Saxony, Germany-1903 Wardsville) and children/grandchildren. I'm descendent of his brother John B. Sommer (1814 Bentheim-1885 Oconee, Shelby Co, IL) who emigrated to America 1867; 20 years later than John G. of Cole County.

Seeking a biography of John G. and his family, transatlantic ship info, anecdotes & local color. My great great grandfather, also named John Gerhard Sommer (1844 Nieuw Schoonebeek, Drenth, Nederland-baptised across the Dutch-German border in Twist, Emsland, Lower Saxony, Germany-emigrated 1867-settled in Christian/Shelby counties Illinois 1877-died Oconee, Shelby Co, IL 1813) came to Cole Co 1867 to marry Anna Helena Maria Sandt (1849-1883) 13 Feb 1867 @ St. Xavier's in Taos, & settled there at his in-laws, Herman Gerhard (1810-1875) & Anna Roeckers Sandt (1818-1871) until some time in the 1870s. I'm sure uncle John G. & his whole family were at the wedding in 1867.

Did uncle John G. (1818-1903) serve in the Civil War? I see John's children Henry W. (1851-1930) & Katharina (1854-1890) buried in St. Stan's cemetery, but know nothing else about them, or about what happened with the other 6 children.

My understanding is; the 2 brothers moved from Grafschaft Bentheim, Germany to Nieuw Schoonebeek, provinz Drenth, Nederland between 1821 & 1827, and interacted with the Catholic community just across the Dutch-German border in Adorf & Twist, Lower Saxony, Germany, in what's now County Emsland. Your John G left about 1845, & my John B. left 1866, just after Prussia replaced Hanover as ruler of the area.

I have pictures of brother John B. (1814-1885), his sons, and video too of the places in Germany & Nederland (Sommeringen Bramsche Lingen, Neuenhaus & Veldhausen Bentheim, Nieuw Schoonebeek Drenth Nederland, Adorf & Twist Emsland) the family hails from, to share.
