Small Place, Someone must have help time??

I am seeking again to find anything to substantiate my grandmothers' claim to birth in 1889-1890 in Pilot Grove, Mo. I assume this is in Cooper Co.? If I am mistaken, please help me with the right place to start looking. She has written on her social security application in the 1950's that she was born in Pilot Grove, Mo. in May of 1889 and her parents were James Dorsey and a Mollie Durem???
I do not believe she knew much at all about any of this.
Is there such a place? Were there any such records kept?
Would appreciate some inquisitive soul helping on this. Genalogists do this sort of thing. Thanks, C. Jones
