Notes for NED RAINES JR.: The Boonville Daily News, Oct 9, 1933, Page 1 Col. 1 Boy Killed While Working Under Auto Ned Raines, 16, Dies After Machine Strikes His Father's Stalled Car BEN CRAIG HELD FOR THE INQUEST Witnesses Testify He Had Been Drinking: Charges Filed Wednesday Charges of reckless driving were filed Wednesday against Benny Craig. He was released under bond to appear in the October term of Circuit Court. Ned Raines, Jr. 16 years old, was fatally wounded in an automobile accident three miles southeast of Arrow Rock on State highway No 41, about 1:30 O'clock Sunday morning while working beneath his father's car, parked on the road, when it was struck by a car driven by Bennie Craig of Arrow Rock. An inquest into the death was conducted at the circuit court room at the court house Monday by Dr. R.L. Anderson, coroner, and the jury returned a verdict placing the blame for the death. Testimony of the various witnesses at the inquest told the story of the fatal accident. The Rains boy was returning to his home at Slater, from Booneville with his parents and a younger brother. They were forced to stop on the highway to repair the car before they reached Arrow Rock. Mr. Rains and Ned crawled under the car, removed the oil pan, and replaced a bearing while the younger boy, in front of the car, struck matches to give them light. Just before they completed the work the Rains car was struck from behind by the car driven by Craig. One of the wheels on the Rains car as broken down and the youth was crushed un the axle. Mrs. Rains, who was sitting in the seat, and Mr. Rains were not injured. And the younger boy was only slightly injured. Although witnesses including Sheriff Bradley and Dr. Anderson stated that Craig admitted he had been drinking, testimony failed to prove that he was intoxicated. He claims not to have seen the Rains car, although both Rains and his wife testified that both the tail light and the head lights were burning. Dick Nuckols of Slater, who was driving a short distance behind Craig at the time of the accident, testified that Craig was not driving fast and that he also did not see the Rains car until after the accident. He said that he took Craig who received lacerating of the face, to his home and returned with Dr. Bradshaw of Arrow Rock and that the boy had not yet died. Dr. Bradshaw testified that he recommended the boy be taken to a hospital immediately, but said that he told the parents that he would not live. Sheriff Bradley, Deputy Sheriff John Chain of Blackwater, and Dr. Anderson each took the stand and told briefly of the accident. Their verdict was " We, the Coroners Jury, having been sworn this ninth day of October, 1933, in the county of Cooper, State of Missouri, by Dr. R.L. Anderson, coroner, to diligently inquire and true presentation make how and by whom Ned Rains Jr. whose body was found ion Highway No. 41 at three miles southeast of Arrow Rock, on the eighth day of October, 1933, came to his death, having viewed the body and heard the evidence do find that being hit by an automobile driven by one Bennie Craig, given under our hands, this ninth of October, 1933, Tyre T.
