Leonard PELTZ (S) in Cooper Co. 1840 census

Is there any info on Leonard Peltz(s) or others by that name? The surname was sometimes SPELTZ(s). My gr-grandfather, Joseph Pelts, was in Dunklin Co. MO by 1851 and may have been related. Both spellings are found in early NC, IN, KY, MO, AR, MS and AL and later in NE and further west. Why would someone move to Cooper Co. MO in that time period? Was it on a migration route, good hunting grounds, farmland, or what?
