Seeking info on my mother's maternal grandfather. He appears on the 1900 Missouri census for DeKalb
county as a single man. He married Ida Belle Scarbrough (Belle) in McLean Co., IL in 1901. The family is recorded in DeKalb Co., MO in the 1910 census with their three daughters. About all we know is that he was Cherokee indian and had a younger half-sister named Maud. She married (Grove or Groves) and lived in Bloomington, IL. He also had an uncle (Frank Ellsworth) who sometimes visited them in Kansas City, MO.

It was said that Charles had "indian papers" that entitled him to claim land (over 100 ac in OK???), but he would have had to live on it -- and declined to do so. The family has NO information on his mother or father -- we don't even know from which parent he received his indian blood. In the 1900 census he listed his father as being born in IL, but in the 1910 census he indicated his father was born in OH. (He consistently listed himself as having been born in MO.) He was a farmer, smithy, and a lover of horses. In his old age I remember my parents picking him up for Sunday drives in the car -- he LOVED automobiles. He suffered a stroke in 1960(s), developed pneumonia, and died.

Are any of my relatives reading this? BTW, how does one go about researching Cherokee indian lineage? I assume since he had "papers" that somewhere his name would be recorded.

Thanks all
