I got this information about 15 years ago. Have not been in contact with them for a number of years and do not know if they are even still alive. It would not surprise me if Elisha was a preacher as that seems to run in the Cole family. My information says Elisha was born Nov. 1832 in Mo. Elisha was 1 of 6 children. One of his brothers was Robert Bruce Cole, my gggrandfather. Elisha's brothers and sisters were born in Crawford and Dent county, Mo. An unnamed sister 1825, David 1827, Rebecca 1829 who married Jackson J. Trusty 1853, Elisha 1832, William 1840, died in Memphis, Tn during civil war, and Robert Bruce 1845.I would love to have the inscription from Matilda's grave. Do you have any information as to where Elisha is buried? George Washington Cole was born Feb. 4, 1799 at Post of St. Andrea, St. Louis Co., Mo. George Washington Cole is listed in a book called "Early Dent County History". Dent county was part of Crawford and Shannon Counties before 1851. George Washington Cole was the son of David Cole 1770-1822. David Cole owned a land grant from the Spanish for land on the Missouri River south of present day St. Louis. David Coles farm was adjacent to Daniel Boone's homestead. Most of the Coles history I have goes back to Dent County. There is a state park there called Mountauk and a church before you enter the park called Mt. Olive. It was build by and on land of Elisha's brother, Robert Bruce Cole, my gggrandfather. The children I have shown for Elisha were all born in Dent County. They are John Marion 1859, M.Rebecca 1861, J.Lafayette 1862, E.S. 1865, Lillie Jane 1866, Rhonda S 1868, Thomas 1870, Matilda 1871, Henry 1873, James David 1875, and Martha 1877. I do not think I have any information concerning the Long's but will check my other information at home. One of Elisha's brothers was David Cole born 1827. His descendants still live in Dent County, Mo. I have just recently returned to working on my geneology and am still trying to get up to speed on the internet and sources. Let me know if this helps. I would love to know more about Elisha's descendants. Thanks. Glenn FROM THE NOTES OFF OF HIS SON'S JACOB OBITUARY. (SEE MORE UNDER JACOB'S NAME) THANKS TO THELMA FRIEDMANN "Jacob Cole, the last of our pioneers gone, December 26, 1882" EDITOR OBSERVER: It does not seem justice to the memory of our pioneer settlers to allow the last vulnerable representative of thatworthy band to go to his final rest unnoticed save by a few lines of an obituary. By such a notice in a recent issue of the Observer, we are informed that Mr. Jacob Cole is no more upon this earth, save in the memory of his many friends. Mr. Cole was beyond doubt, the last survivor of the few citizens who came across the Mississippi and took up their abode in the forests of Missouri, previous to the commencement of the present century. He was born in Lafayette County, Kentucky, Januaary 25, 1797. With his father and the rest of their family he crossed the Mississippi at the then village of St. Louis on the 30th of November 1798. The family pushed out into the woods south of the Missouri River, but in 1804 they located in St. Charles County north of the river. At that time there was some trouble with the Indians in those parts, and one John Ridenhour, a neighbor was killed by them. Each settlement had its stockade for defense, and the pioneer settler had to be soldier and hunter as well as farmer, to maintain an existence in the forest. Mr. Cole remembered well when there were but three counties in the territory of Missouri and three courts at St. Genevieve, St. Louis and St. Charles, respectively. (NOTE...there were actually five districts in the Territory of Missouri during that early time. Jacob Cole or the writer forgot Cape Girardeau and New Madrid.) The last time I had the pleasure of conversing with Mr. Cole, a few months since, his recollections of those early days seemed as fresh as if he was in the vigor of early life and manhood, and he conversed in a most historical manner of historical events of three quarters of a century ago as if they had occurred but yesterday. He said that on the 13th of August 1813, he settled on what is now included in Franklin County, and that fall put in a crop of wheat near Labadie. His neighbors then were few and far between. Daniel Boone was with his settlement north of the river. He thought the farthest up any white man had ventured to settle on the Bourbeuse was at Porter Ford, in the neighborhood of Union. He was of the opinion that the western boundary of St. Louis county had not been established, that her jurisdiction went clear through at least at least as she was physically able to carry it. He well remembered the great shake-up known as the New Madrid earthquake of 1811. He said all the then settled country this side of the Mississippi was considerably shook up. In what is now New Madrid County, the topography was so changed, the surface so rent and broken as to destroy a good shaare of the farms that had been cleared up. The government soon after ordered the completion of the survey east of the 5th principal meridian and south of the Missouri River. Those who had been despoiled of their farms by the earthquake then had issued to them scripts or warrants entitling them to relocate on this survey. If he remembered correctly, the survey was made in 1817. "Old Joe Brown" had charge of the work and Mr. Cole assisted as chain carrier. He related how a great many of those who were intended to be benefited by this grant, but having got the idea that real estate in these parts as not real terra firma, bartered away their right to locate for a mere trifle. He related how a great many of those who were intended to be benefited by this grant, but having got the idea that real estate in these parts as not real terra firma, bartered away their right to locate for a mere trifle. Thus were purchased rights to locate some of the best farms in Missouri bottoms with merely enough to equip a man with ax, gun and a dog, the requistites for a start in the wilderness. Of course, educational advantages could hardly be said to exist at all in this part of the world when Mr. Cole was of school age. He did attend school, however, once a term of three or four weeks, was attending at the time of the earthquake. After he had attained to man's estate he applied himself to study, and acquired a fair rudimentary education. As he was always fond of reading, especially works on history and the newspapers, and an agreeable conversationalist, he would pass in almsost any company as an educated and intelligent man. The old inhabitants along the Missouri River well remember when Jacob Cole was with them and a wealthy as well as respected citizen. In his old age misfortunes overtook him. The many broad acres he had reclaimed from the wilderness and the comfortable home, overlooking the great river, had to be surrendered, and up, even to his 86th year, he "earned his bread by the sweat of his brow." Last summer he had harvested with his own hands a crop of wheat he had sown himself, and sowed again last fall for next harvest. But ere its time he has been gardnered. Avenerable relic of other times and other generations, probably the last patriot of Daniel Boone, and the oldest inhabitant of the whole Missouri valley is gone and none of the band of pioneers struggled more arduously for the development of our country than he has for the last three-quarters of a century; and none in departing has left behind a more noble example of purer character than has Jacob Cole. They say the family is very hush hush about this. We believe that Seth was named after Seth B. Howard who married one of Eliza's sister, Martha E. Morton. In 1862 Eliza remarries to a Charles L. Sharp. With help from A friend we, found Daniel T. Cole in 1860 census Plumas Co, Rich Bar Twp, CA Danl T. Cole male 30 m miner MO value of $600. Madison Hall male 28 miner OH value of $1000 Soon emigrants began to move into the area on up the Weiser River. Indian Valley, 12 miles east of Salubria, was the next area to begin to be populated. One of the early emigrants was a sickly man, Albert 'Olly' McDowell. He and his wife, Francis Brown, had six children and came from Dubuque, IA. Albert had tuberculosis, and his doctor had advised him to move to a warmer climate. It could be argued that the Weiser River valleys were probably no warmer than where he had come from, but in 1867, he and two brothers, with a friend, Isaac Spoor, formed a wagon train, and the family came first to Salubria. These all traveled up the Crane Creek variant. Albert's two older girls, Elizabeth and Elvira, stayed in Salubria where Elizabeth found a school teacher's position in need of her skills in 1868. She met "Daniel" Taylor Cole, a young, earlier emigrant to the area, who was also TEACHING IN SCHOOL, and soon married him. (Two teachers in one school offers a hint of how large the school had become with the influx of those early pioneers.) Albert tried Indian Valley for a short time, but evidently it was not helpful to his health. His family picked up their things and moved on to Monterey, CA, the same year they came to Idaho, in 1867. Cole Hello again: 07-Dec-1902 Death of D.T. Cole D.T. Cole, an old timer in this valley, passed away last Sunday evening. He had been ailing for a good many years, and his death was not unexpected. Mr. Cole was born in St. Louis on May 4, 1830, and was in his 64th year when he died. He was married at Boise to Miss Elizabeth McDowell and shortly afterward moved to this valley, arriving here in 1868, and has been a resident of this neighborhood ever since. He at one time owned the farm on which Mr. Eddy now lives, where the postoffice of Spring was located. Thirteen children were born to them, eleven of whom are still living. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence, conducted by Rev. Willoughby. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to the Salubria cemetery, where he waslaid to rest. He leaves a wife, four sons and seven daughters to mourn his demise. Obituary Elizabeth L. Hall Elizabeth Lorraine McDowell was born at Dubuque, Iowa, June 21, 1848. At sixteen years of age she taught her first term of school near there. In May 1865 she crossed the plains with her parents in company with a Quaker emigrant train of 300 wagons, bound for California. In the fall of 1865 they reached Boise Valley Idaho, where she accepted a term of school for the winer, the emigrant train continuing on its way to California. October 7, 1866, she was married to Daniel T. Cole at Boise. After spending three years near there they came to Salubria Valley, where with the exception of five years, they spent their married life. Daniel T. Cole died Dec. 7, 1902. Thirteen children were born to them, eight of whom are living: Mary E. Lynch, McMinville, Ore., Hattie L. Macey, Potersville, Calif., Nina L. Nixon, Brownlee, Ore., Chas. A Cole, Homestead, Ore., Adelia V. Roberts, Los Angeles, Calif., Carmeta B. Moore, Wildhorse, Ida., Daniel T. Cole, Los Angeles, Calif., Perry A. Cole, Casper, Wyo., Inez H. Typton, Whitebird, Idaho. Mrs. Cole was postmistress at Spring, Ida. for 13 years and among her letters were found a letter of appreciation from Postmaster General Jno. Wannamaker. She was twice elected Justice of the Peace in the Salubria Precinct. Her standing in the community in which she lived was always the highest - she was loved and revered by her neighbors, and numbered her friends by her acquaintances. In the early days she was ever the first at the bed-side of a sick neighbor and her entire life was one of service. In March, 1923 she was married to Geo. W. Hall at Viculin, Calif. Every since his sudden death last november she has been gradually failing in health. About the first of June she went to visit her daughter, Mrs. Typton, at Whitebird, where she passed away June 30, 1924. Altho there but a short time, she had won the hearts of her daughters friends. Funeral services were conducted by the Rebekah Lodge of which she was an old and honored member, and she was buried in the beautiful Odd Fellow cemetery near Whitebird. Besides her children she leaves one sister, Mrs. Adelia Upchurch of Boise and one brother, Albert McDowell of Indian Valley, also 22 grand children and eight great grand children to mourn her departure. I haven't tried to find D.T.'s Probate record, but it's the next thing on my list, so if there is a will I will get it to you. The museum in Cambridge has pictures of most of the Cole family with the exception of (wouldn't you know) Daniel, and copies of these could be sent to you. We have obituaries for two of the children, Daniel T., and Lilian if you are interested, and copies of his homestead deeds. Good hunting, and God Bless. Dottie Emert, Weiser, Idaho. (Dickie Taylor is buried in an isolated ranch grave, not in the Salubria Cemetery: "Bo Thorson writing to someone: " We don't really know why Dickie was buried where he is. It was common for people to bury family on their homestead, especially children. Although the Salubria cemetery was started in 1880, the river may have been high, or the distance prohibitive, or since it was winter, the snow may have been heavy. But most likely it was just the common practice. It is more unusual, however, to have such a stone. He must have been a much loved baby, and his parents had sufficient funds to get a stone soon after his death. Dickie's stone was done by a George Moody, who was a stone carver in Salubria around 1892 for several years. He later moved to Moscow and is rather well known in Idaho especially for his work in the north. At the time we did the study of the isolated graves, the Museum erected the fence around Dickie's grave to preserve it from the work being done nearby.")
