Article Date: May 14 1890

Article Description: Missouri's First Settlement.

Article Text:

The first white settlement in the State of Missouri was made at Ste. Genevieve,
below St. Louis, between the years of 1735 and 1763, the time not being definitely
determined. The city of St. Lois was settled by Pierre Linquest LACLEDE in 1764.
LACLEDE was murdered by an Indian who was bribed by an Englishman, who paid him for the
horrible deed by giving him a barrel of whisky.
