Martha Shirley

We do not know the husband or parents of my ancestor, Martha Ann Shirley. She was born in 1823 in Kentucky. She was in Mercer County on the 1860 census.

1860 Census; Goshen, Harrison Twp, Mercer Co, MO; 16 July 1860.
1265-1265 M. A. Shirley 36 F W Weaver KY
J. H. 14 M W KY
E. J. 4 F W MO

In 1863, her son, James Harrison Shirley (J. H. above) joined the 13th regiment, Company D, of the Missouri Union Cavalry in Mercer County.

Mary Ann Shirley, Martha's eldest daughter, was probably in Mercer County with her and met Mary's future husband Joseph Franklin Elam there. They were married 2 Nov 1865 probably in Mercer County.

By 1870, they were in Decatur county, Iowa.

Is there anyone who can see if Martha, James Harrison, Mary Ann, and Elizabeth Jane Shirley had a man of the house living with them in Mercer County? Perhaps tax lists?

I would surely appreciate any help that can be given on this. Thank you.

Norma Lundgren
