I want to thank all of you who have helped me in seeking out the parents of John Wesley Darcy, including Constance Peck, Doug Corbin,Paula Yount, Charles Kerwin, and especially Judya1947 who supplied lots of advice and documents backchannel. I will be continuing this genealogical work—it’s addictive--in the near future. Here is what I have for now. Perhaps others will have input. The parents of John Wesley Darcy appear to have been J.M. Dorsey and Laura Jane Keaster. The 1880 census for Sherman Township, Johnson County, Arkansas, show them together, apparently right after they were married. J.M. is listed as age 21, and Laura J Dorsey is listed as 25. An M.J. Bradley, 17, shares their household. John Wesley Darcy’s death certificate in Fresno, CA in 1956, lists the name Keester as his mother’s maiden name. Laura Jane Dorsey appears to be the same person as Jane L Darcy, a widow, with 3 of 5 surviving children, listed with her daughter Elizabeth (Darcy) Patterson and son-in-law James Patterson, and living next door to her son, John Wesley Darcy, and his wife Ellen (Patterson) Darcy in the 1910 Oklahoma Census. She was listed as age 54 in that census. Her other surviving child, George Darcy, was listed as a boarder with an Adams family a few houses away. The identification of Laura J as Jane L is corroborated by the presence of Laura Jane among her Keaster siblings in a number of documents. Her younger brother, William Jasper Keaster, registered for the WWI draft in 1918 and listed John Wesley Darcy as his employer as a cotton picker. Laura Jane Keaster’s siblings included Charles H Keaster William Jasper Keaster and Thomas Madison Keaster. Their parents were apparently William Joseph Keaster and Elizabeth (Cutrell) Keaster. A number of leads, although lacking complete documentation, suggest that the parents of J.M. Dorsey were John C Dorsey and America (Braden) Darsey. J.M. Dorsey seems to be the same as Patrick M Darcy, age 1, in the 1860 Carroll Co. MO census. Parents are John C Darcy, 32, and America (Braden) Darcy, 18. In 1860 Jeremiah Darcy, age 4, is also listed as their son. Patrick M’s 1859 date of birth would fit for J.M. Dorsey in the 1880 census. Patrick M Darcy doesn’t appear again in the records, but Jeremiah Darcy and W.E. Darcy, appear with America’s Braden grandparents in 1870, after the death of John C Darcy in the Civil War, and after America has remarried to William Hays. The 1870 census also lists Martin Darcy and William Darcy as living with America and William Hays. Martin ( possibly representing the M in Patrick M and J. M) is the right age to be J.M. Dorsey who marries Laura J Keaster. Other clues that America’s children include J M Dorsey include the presence of Jeremiah Darcy’s family near John Wesley Darcy in the same tiny town in Morris, Oklahoma in 1910 and also in the same tiny town in Arkansas in another census. John C Dorsey enlisted in Company K of the 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry on Dec 18, 1861. He died Sept 22, 1862 of disease at Macon, GA while a prisoner of war. Other surnames that appear in John Wesley Darcy’s ancestry include Cutrell, Braden, Northcott (Northcut), and Standley. Notify Administrator about this message?
