I have a deed dated 20 Oct 1827 (Todd Co., KY, Deed Book E, pp. 73-74) in which Peter THOMPSON sells land to Claibourne MOBLEY of Todd County. I believe this must be the Clabourn MOBLEY who married Elizabeth ELLISON on 24 Dec 1821 in Todd Co., KY. He is said to have been born in SC and his father to be William MOBLEY. This Claibourne is exactly the right age to be the father of your Claibourne. Many Todd Co. families pushed on to Missouri in the 1820s and 30s.

Stuart Seely Sprague's (1984) book, "Kentuckians in Missouri" (on p. 154), shows a Judge Hazel P. MOBLEY (b. 8 Aug 1814), s/o Richard MOBLEY of SC, to have moved from Todd Co., KY, to MO in/by 1857. Sprague's source is "History of Vernon County, Missouri" (Brown & Co., St. Louis, 1887), p. 672.

GenealogyLibrary.com shows the following MOBLEY's in the 1850 Census of Todd Co.: Claiborn, Eli, John W., N.L., Sophia, W.E., William -- and a misread "Hagel," who is obviously Hazel. Checking... Hazel is age 24, wife Eliza age 20, son Thomas age 1, all born in KY.

I'd start digging in Todd Co., KY -- and Vernon Co., MO. The names Claiborne and Hazel are just tooooo unusual to be a coincidence.

My interest, here, is THOMPSON, so I have no information on MOBLEY beyond what I've posted, except to say that there are other MOBLEYs and MOBERLEYs in Sprague's book -- which is well worth having for anyone with KY>MO kin. Ditto a subscription to GenealogyLibrary.com, which is worth it for the 1850 KY census images alone.

Good hunting.
