Yes, I was indeed adopted by my aunt. My name was changed to Robert Rota, which was my mother's maiden name and also the original family name as it was spelled in Italy. Many of our family had changed the spelling to Rote, upon arriving to Ellis Island from Calabria, Italy. This was a common practice during the early part of the last Century as many Italian Americans faced great hardships with regard to racism and prejudice. There was also great pride among Italian American for their new adopted Country and yearning to become "American".
For the record. Sheila and I meet last week for the first time. It was very special and I hope to remain in closer contact with her in the future.
For all you out there looking for long-lost relatives, keep the faith. It can happen.
