Edward Walton Mobley

Trying to find out if Edward's mother, Mary Ann Mobley, was ever married ... or ... who is father might have been.

I have found listed as Edward Walton Mobley and as Edward Walter Mobley, with birthdates of either 16 May 1869 or 16 May 1870.

Heis not found in the 1870 census for SC (or GA), but appears in the 1880 census for Abbeville County, SC living with his aunt Mary Crawford ... as well as a 5 yr old sister Mary.

Tracing his mother (Mary Ann Mobley back), I find that she is the daughter of Thomas Mabrey Mobbley and Martha Crawford and that she was born Jul 1848 in Abbeville, SC.

Edward later married Alice Josphine Lawton, and one of their children (Sallie Lou Mobley) later married a Robert Lawton ... who is in my line. (The Robert Lawton line is equally convoluted with his mother (another Jospehine).

It seems that this area in the SC/GA regions of Abbeville, Lincoln County, and Elbert County had "more than their share" of unmarried mothers. Could this be somehow connected with the period following the war?
