George Moffat of England (Nephew of John Phillips bd 1806)

My GGG Grandfather was John C. Phillips of Nova Scotia, Canada. John C. Phillips was born in Scotland circa 1806, and died in Nova Scotia circa 1891. He married a Grace (birth date circa 1816 - last name unknown). John C., and wife Grace ? had a daughter named Sarah Jane Phillips who married Rufus Brown Metcalf - my GG Grandfather. I have two old letters that were written to John C. from relatives in England. The first written in 1828 is from his brother James in England, addressed to John Phillips, School Master, Londonderry, Nova Scotia, and the second written in 1854 from a nephew named George Moffat of England, addressed: John C. Phillips, River Phillip, Cumberland, Nova Scotia. Both of these letters are fragile, and very difficult to read due to the "cross writing" that was done to save paper.

I'm looking for any info available on John C. Phillips and his wife grace. I suspect that Grace may have been a native indian, possibly (Mi'q mac). I have a picture of whom I think may be John and Grace taken in 1864, and she appears to have the features of a Native American.

Please contact me via E-mail @ if you have any info. THANKS!!

Frank Peveril Metcalf
