Hi,

Here is your family on the 1841 and 1851 census:
1841 Parish of Dykeneuk Newbattle:

Moffat, William, m, 25, coal miner b. Mid
Moffat, Jane, f, 25 b. Mid
Moffat, Janet, f, 8, b. Mid
Moffat, Helen, f, 7, b. Mid
Moffat, David, m, 2, b. Mid
Moffat, Jane, f, 5 months, b. Mid

1851 Parish of Dykeneuk, Newbattle

Moffat, William, m, HD, M, 39, Oversman, Newbattle Colliery b. Newbattle
Moffat, Jane, f, WI, M, 36, b. Newbattle
Moffat, David, m, SO, U, 12, scholar, b. Newbattle
Moffat, Jane, f, DA, U, 10, scholar, b. Newbattle
Moffat, James, m, SO, U, 8, scholar, b. Newbattle
Moffat, William, m, So, U, 5, scholar, b. Newbattle
Moffat, Marion, f, DA, U, 3, b. Newbattle
Moffat, John, m, SO, U, 1, b. Newbattle

I have never been able to figure out for sure who William's parents were either though Jane's were Francis Walkingshaw and Jean Campbell.

However, William was younger than you thought. As he was only 25 in 1841 and around 39 in 1851 that means he was born sometime between 1812 and 1816 or thereabouts.

Elaine
