Good Evening (at least it is here!)
Thanks for responding so quickly! My Mary Moffat who married William Graham lived and died in the Broughshane area.We believe she died around 1845 as he re-marries Sally (Sarah) Morton d/o David Morton of Kirkinriola.Yes Broughshane is near Ahoghill. We visited there in l996 and what a wonderful place..Ireland that is!
Should you venture into Broughshane do look up Alex Patterson who lives on Carnalbanugh Road on the Townland of Drummuck..send our best, he may be able to assist you with that Mrs. Moffat!Samuel Moffat the forebear of your Mary Barclay (nee Moffat) well he was born in and or around Ayrshire, Scotland and fought in the battle of Bothwell Bridge on June 22, 1679.Shortly thereafter Samuel fled Scotland with 2 sons (no wife is mentioned for Samuel), William and Samuel for Ballylig (townland) Ireland. This Samuel Moffat left Ireland and followed his son William whosettled in New Jersey (Moffats from Ulster and Orange descend from them).Samuels other son also named Samuel married Martha McCully and had children and lived their lives on Ballylig Townland, Ireland.Samuel and Martha (McCully) Moffat are the Irish Moffats which my Mary Graham (nee Moffat) descends from....but from which of Samuels children we do not know, as of yet!Samuel and Martha had a son by the name of William who married a Barbara Chestnut and they left Ireland for South Carolina and settled there their entire lives.Samuel, the son of Samuel who fled Scotland, died in 1765 and his will was admitted to probate on May 2, 1765 from it it named his wife Martha McCully and children; William, Thomas, John, Margaret and Mary. Samuel who left Ireland (the forebearer) for Woodbridge, NJ was admitted to the Presbyterian Church in Woodbridge on October 3, 1710. Date of death unknown. The son William who left Ireland and his fatherSamuel Moffat followed him shortly thereafter. This William married a woman by the name of Margaret (?) and they had five children, they were; Samuel, Thomas, William, Mary and John.
William Moffats daughter Mary is your Mary Moffat who married James Barclay!
Our common ancestor is Samuel who fled Scotland and lived for awhile on Ballylig Townland near the Village of Broughshane, County Antrim before leaving and following his son William! So that would make us cousins! The name of the book from which alot of this information was extracted is:
Moffat Genealogies: Descent fromRev. John Moffat of Ulster County New York. This book was privately printed in l909.Author was, R. Burnham Moffat.Hope all of the common names doesn't get too confusing for you to follow my message!
Mary Graham (nee Moffat) Graham and her husband William Graham had a son by the name of Nathaniel who married Rose Gordon from the Townland of Drumlickney married in l841 and had 7 children there left for NY and settled into Ontario Canada in l858, having 4 more children and then they eventually settled in the thumb of Michigan/Sanilac County.I currently live in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan. This is how we made it to the USA!
Look to hear from you!Michelle
