I think we have a match.

I am descended from Richard Moffatt/Elizabeth Sleeman m. 1796 Cornwall, England. They had Josias, Thomas and Richard. I think this Richard is your Richard who migrated to American in 1848 with his family.

Our Josias Sleeman Moffatt who migrated to Australia in 1857 received a letter from Josias Sleeman (cousine) in Washington DC in 1865 who wrote about his brother Arthur who was in the war and his sister Elizabeth etc.

Sounds like the same family.
