I own two Navy cannons invented by Richard R. Moffatt and built under his supervision in the 1870's. His basic ordnance invention was an early breechloading system, but he had a number of other patents in related and unrelated fields. The first tests of his first full-sized weapon were done at the Washington Navy Yard in 1863. He had a lot of trouble with it but kept improving it and coming back for more tests. I'm looking for all of the bio info I can find on him, so that supplied above by Mary is useful. He first went by "R.R. Moffatt" on his patents, but the 1875 patent I'll link here uses Richard R. Moffatt.

I'm posting all of my "Moffatt breechloading cannon" information on the Company of Military Historians forum if you care to look, you can sign in as a guest from their homepage.
