Re: The IGI Index of “Mogridges” in the British Isles.

Now that the IGI is on-line and giving up to 2000 entries on a search, it is possible to see how many “Mogridges” are on record. It must be remembered that records are often duplicated (especially weddings) and ancestral records are often estimated rather than real (and thus possibly duplicated as well). The records also overlap those of the FRC after 1837. Moreover, some counties are not yet complete, especially Wiltshire, an early Mogridge home. The estimate must therefore remain tentative until further verification. The overseas Mogridges are not included, although it is interesting that there are more Maugridges and Morgridges in the US than in the UK, especially in New England.

The estimate I have is as follows, grouped by type:

Mackridge (137) comprises Mackaridge 2. Mackerag 1, Mackeredge 2, Mackeridge 24, Mackerige 1, Mackridge 88, Macridge 2, Mccaridge 3, Mc Ridge 2, Makaridge 4, Makredge 3, Makridge 5

Maugridge (258) comprises Maugridge (242), Maugrige (1), Mawgridge (15)

Mockridge (283) comprises Moccaridge 1, Moccridge 1, Moceridge 2, Mockeradge 8, Mockerage 2, Mockeridg 10, Mockeridge 48, Mockerige 5, Mockerydge 11, Mockrage 6, Mockredg 3, Mockridg 2, Mockridge 180, Mockrydge 2, Mokarage 2

Modgridge (37) comprises Modgrich 1, Modridge 6, Modgridge 19, Modyridge 1, Mudgridge 10.

Mogridge (1835) comprises Mogeridg 10, Mogeridge 87, Mogerige 6, Mograge 9, Mogredge 15, Mogridg 58, Mogridge 1650.

Moggridge (751) comprises Moggarage 1, Moggaridge 5, Moggerage 4, Moggeredge 5, Moggerege 1, Moggeridg 7, Moggeridge 192, Moggerige 2, Moggridg 22, Moggridge 499, Moggryg 12, Moggryy 1

Morgridge (30) comprises Mordgridge 1, Morgaridge 1, Morgeridge 4, Morggridge 1, Morgradge 2, Morgridge 15, Morgrige 1, Moriggeridge 1, Murgridg 2, Murgridge 2.

Mougridge (13) comprises Mougeridge 4, Mouggridge 2, Mougridge 5, Mowgridge 2.

Muckridge (12)
Muckeridge (13)

Mugeridge (157) comprises Mugaridg 3, Mugaridge 15, Mugarige 3, Mugarridge 4, Mugeredge 2, Mugereg 1, Mugeridg 2, Mugeridge 127.

Mugridge (619) comprises Mugredge 21, Mugrege 1, Mugridg 22, Mugridge 562, Mugrige 13.

Muggeridge (842) comprises Muggaridge 23, Muggeorge 1, Muggeredge 13, Muggeridge 801, Muggerige 4,

Muggridge (489) comprises Muggradge 16, Muggredge 7, Muggridge 460, Muggrige 6.

Thus the total number of “Mogridges” in the IGI is 5476 with almost 100 variant spellings (it would be over 100 if overseas variants were included).

The original home of the name appears to be in Devon along the Exe valley from Molland via Tiverton to Exeter, in Somerset around Taunton and Pitminster, and later along the South Coast. It is also known that there is a home around Salisbury, Wiltshire, not in the IGI.

The early cluster of Mackridges in Teeside may indicate a different origin of this name. It is consonant with Makaris, which has some 195 entries in the IGI with many variants included, and early clusters in Teeside, Lincoln and Cambridge, which probably suggests Danish/ Viking origin.

The original pronunciation of Mogridge appears to be as in Morgh-ridge i.e. Mor as in more finishing with a gh or ch as in the scottish loch or in J.S. Bach. This would explain why the variants Morgridge/ Maugridge etc who emigrated very early to New England are still common there with the Elizabethan pronunciation whereas these spellings have died out in England.
