The UK-Info Names Index of Mogridges in 1998

The UK-Info Names Index gives for the United Kingdom (and the Republic of Ireland) the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all people registered in the electoral registers of 1998 i.e. all adults entitled to vote. This totals some 47 million people.

There are a number of drawbacks which need to be borne in mind. As with all registers which transcribe handwriting to typescript, there will be errors of transcription. (A potential example of this is the name Moggenoge which was probably Moggeridge - think about it!).

The electoral registration forms are sent out in August, are due for completion on a day in October, are ready in proof in December and come into force in the following February. This is long enough for some people to die (about 1.5% die per year), and for many people to move (about 11% of people move in a given year). There will thus be people on the register who have died, and many people on the register in two places because of migration. Moreover, one is entitled to be on the register in any place one has a home, provided that one only uses one vote for a given jurisdiction e,g one can vote in two local areas on the same day for the separate local authorities, but only once for the national Parliament. There will thus be people in two places in the register for this reason as well.

On the other hand, there will be many people who do not wish to register for their vote, and thus are missing from the register. It is estimated that this is particularly relevant for young adult non-white males in urban areas, where up to 25% in certain ethnic groups may not register, but typically comprises about 4% of the adult population.

There will also be people who have exercised their right, legally backed by the Data Protection Act, to have their name deleted from the electronic register. This is probably a small number as yet, but may well grow with time. It is stated that up to 37% of personal telephone subscribers in the UK are ex-directory (56% in London) and 30% in the Republic of Ireland.

The list of “Mogridges” in the register is as follows (with the number in the most common county or town in brackets - n.b. the postal counties omit the postal towns):

       Mackridge”              56
       Maggridge               3
       Meggeridge               1
       Mockeradge               1
       Mockeridge              43
       Mockrdige               2
       Mockridge              423       (Somerset 84)
       Mogdridge               1
       Mogeridge              1
       Moggenoge               1
       Moggeride                2
       Moggeridge              57
       Moggridge              215       (London 29)
       Moggridge-Lowe        2
       Mogridg               1
       Mogridge              438       (Devon 42)
       Morgridge               5
       Muggeridge              543       (W Sussex 125)
       Muggridge              249       (Kent 98)
       Mugridge              443       (E Sussex 39)

Thus the “Mogridges” total some 1254 and the “Mugridges” some 1235, a grand total of 2489.

The only “Mogridges” in the Republic of Ireland are 3 Mogridges who have been included above.

*It should be remembered that the Mackridges are probably from a mixture of origins.
