Hi Susan,
I have to apologize for just responding to your post. I haven't checked the boards in a long time. Here's some more info on the Moirs in my family.
Scott Moir is the earliest descendant that I know. The 1880 census lists him as a mulatto farmer who was born in 1820 and lived in Irisburg, Henry County, Virginia.
The 1870 census shows his ex-wife, Nancy Martin Moir living in Leaksville with her children Franky and June. Peter Moir and his family live next door. The 1880 census shows Nancy still living in Leaksville with her children that include Jane, Ruth, Alice and two Stultz children.
Another of Scott and Nancy's children was Cloria Moir Starling (who worked in 1880 as a house servant for Thomas and Permelia Starling in Irisburg, Henry county, VA and later married a farm laborer named Ruben Starling).
I've been told that some family members in Leaksville and Spray later changed the spelling of their name from Moir to Moyer. We have a family cemetery off Morgan Ford Road (Moirtown-Scalestown Cemetery). There are African-American Moirs (Moyers), Starlings, Hairstons, Scales, Hamptons and Strongs buried there.
Let me know if any of those names, places or dates jibe with what you have.
Best,
Kelly
