I have a letter written on 13 March 1934 to my great, great grandfather John Benjamin Munger from a "Katie Garland Mounger Snow Luttrell."She gave her married name as "Mrs. E.F. Cauthen," and described herself as the granddaughter of "Priscilla Mounger Snow."She said she lived in Auburn, Alabama but that her Mounger people came from Tenn. She also said she had a painting with the name "Dave's" on the back of it which was given to her by her grandmother Priscilla when Katie was 2 weeks old, and that Priscilla had named her "Katie Garland."
Katie was writing to John Benjamin Munger because she was trying to trace her Mounger family back to VA and wanted to know if John Benjamin had ever heard of the name "Katie Garland."She said she had obtained his address from a 1914 Munger book by J.B. Munger of CT.She further said that she was collecting information with the intention of publishing a book about her family. She mentioned the following about the spelling ofher name "you will note that we use the 'ou' but many of the Tennesseeans are using Monger as most of those in Virginia seem to do now."
She also described a horrible story about a "Munger or Monger" who died in a charcoal fire, and wanted to know if anyone was aware of this story, or of the man's full name.
Unfortunately, John Benjamin Munger was unable to help her, as he knew nothing about her Mounger line, and had never heard the name Katie Garland. So far as I know they were unable to connect the two families.
