The Monger branch of myfamily been traced back to the death of James Monger in 1722 in Swansea, Wales. I must say that some branches of Mongers in the US do hail from the UK. I can't recall where I read it, but someone once wrote that this version of the name came from old Scottish word "meagenger," which meant "strong spear." Well, everyone would like to think that their name meant strong spear, and didn't mean the profession of some smelly guy in a market selling fish ;-)
