I am not researching this family, just entering information from one of my books "Houses Virginians Have Loved" by Agnes Rothery, 1954:
"The children of Abingdon are particularly fond of a story about the wild and wicked Indians who were a constant threat to the town in its early days. In 1776, a band of them appeared in the neighborhood of Blacks Fort, scalped and killed Frederick Mongle and attempted to capture the Reverend Charles Cummings, William Crewswell and others."
