I've been reading this exchange with interest. My g-grandfather was Manoel Muniz (we are not sure if that is the correct spelling of the last name since it was changed in the US, but that is what the birth record says). He was born on Sao Miguel in 1864, in the same area as Riberina Grande. His grandparents were Jacinto Muniz and Theresa de Jesus. His godfather was Jacinto Pacheco. These were probably common names and may be no relation but you never know! Manoel's older brother (we don't know the name) emmigrated to the Oakland CA area. Manoel went to Mass.
